C2E2; The Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo is a yearly convention honoring comics and other forms of entertainment. It was first started in the year 2010. Many people who go love to go in costume and dress as a character who inspires them. This year I went to the convention dressed as Spider-Man! Spider-Man and Billy the original Blue Ranger are two very big personal inspirations for me. I follow David Yost on Instagram under my Instagram name "mrprbdragon88." I also follow some other great Ranger actors and actresses, but for today we'll focus on him. Prior to the convention I saw David post a video promoting new clothes from Affirmative Clothing Company. David and some friends of his established this company. They too were inspired by David's original TV role. "Affirmative" was a catchphrase used by Billy dating back to the first episode. Among the fancy clothes David was promoting were Triceratops Socks. Which caught my attention because I also like Triceratops a lot. The day I attended the convention was February 29th. I also have a strong passion for Action Figures. I was especially excited to get one of the new Hasbro Lighting line figures. I have seen these promoted on YouTube by people like Andre Meadows; "Black Nerd Comedy" and Shartimus Prime who are also big action figure collectors. I now have both the White Ranger from Mighty Morphin, and the Magna Defender from Lost Galaxy. I spent a lot of money on comics and figures at the convention and when I finally had time to visit the Affirmative Booth, I was very low on cash. However I was eager to still talk to David Yost in person, as I consider him a great inspiration. We got along very well and had a pleasant chat. I always bring business cards with the blog info along to conventions and other fun events. After purchasing the cool socks with my credit card to save cash, I officially gave David a business card. I definitely want to thank him for being so kind and open and taking the time to listen to me. Also while at the convention I ran into another costumed visitor who was dressed as the Scarlet Spider. This character was introduced in the "Clone Saga" ; a nineties Spider-Man comic storyline. We did a selfie together. This year's convention was a lot of fun and I am looking forward to going next year, hopefully with more time and money.
I also want to take the opportunity to talk a little here about David Yost and also Spider-Man inspiring me as I grew up. Science was often a tricky subject for me. However I really like how Billy and Spider-Man use science to defeat the bad guys and save the day. Unlike magicians who like to hide their tricks, these two thrive on explanations. Spider-Man often likes to hype it up as a key part of his character and sneak in a joke if possible. Billy is often much more serious although I have seen him crack jokes too. Billy takes a subject mentioned in the story and explains it in a grand scientific way. He has talked about Animals, Magnets, Weather, Environments, Outer Space, the Sun, and other great science concepts. When I hear the science lessons from someone I truly respect is when they stick the most. Fast forward to Seventh Grade my trickiest science assignment; dissecting an Earthworm! It seemed very repulsive and I did not really want to do it. However I thought about my science heroes and pushed forward. Spider-Man and the Blue Ranger inspired me to strive ahead and do my work. I finished the assignment and got a C+. That was a great day. Billy and Spider-Man are Science giants as far I am concerned and with my full-size figures they can both stand really tall as shown in the last Picture. Affirmative! and that's a wrap! (web)
This was a great post. I especially liked your insight into how people can do a better job teaching science, and how actors can inspire people to enjoy science. I hope this post gets the attention it deserves. A better title might have been "How I learned to like science". Or "A tribute to Spiderman and the Blue Ranger who make science interesting." And this post was quite brief and full of a lot of information. Great job, Gimothy!
